The Eastern Province Municipality has launched a project to document and digitally tag over 100,000 trees in Alkhobar, aiming to make it the region’s first smart green city. Ranked 61st in the 2025 Smart Cities Index, Alkhobar is set to boost its global standing through this initiative. Officials say it reflects a commitment to environmental sustainability and encourages private sector participation in tree-planting, creating both ecological and economic benefits.
An electronic tag containing comprehensive information in Arabic and English, including the species, location, and maintenance instructions, will be attached to every tree. The tags will be geo-linked to build an extensive database of Alkhobar's green assets.
Additionally, the project will increase social responsibility, develop environmental awareness, and encourage investment in sustainable infrastructure and smart cities.
Over 10,000 trees have already been tagged in locations such as the Northern Corniche, the Southern Corniche, the shoreline, and along major thoroughfares. Eventually, the effort will cover every tree in the city.
