Riyadh has made history as the first city in the Middle East to earn the Global Active City certification, an international accolade recognizing cities that foster active lifestyles and promote health, the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) announced on Monday.
“The Global Active City certification highlights Riyadh’s dedication to applying top international standards in health, activity, and quality of life. It reflects RCRC’s commitment to creating a sustainable global city centered on its residents,” the commission shared on X.
The RCRC stated that the award acknowledges years of efforts to enhance Riyadh’s quality of life. Initiatives such as expanding public spaces, developing sports facilities, and creating active transport routes have laid the groundwork for healthier urban living.
The Global Active City certification is awarded by the Active Well-being Initiative and endorsed by the International Olympic Committee.
