Saudi Arabia’s TGA introduces facial recognition for ride-hailing drivers

The Transport General Authority (TGA) announced on Sunday that it will implement facial recognition verification for ride-hailing drivers to enhance compliance and improve passenger service reliability. This AI-powered technology allows verification of drivers’ identities by analyzing facial features from photos or videos.

Alongside this, the TGA launched an electronic driver registration platform to record driver details, verify identities and vehicles, and ensure accurate data and high service quality. The authority said the system will be rolled out in the first quarter of the year and will serve as a central tool for managing driver records and confirming eligibility for ride-hailing apps.

The TGA emphasized that ride-hailing activities on these platforms are limited to Saudi citizens. The new measures aim to strengthen transparency, protect users’ rights, and ensure that registered drivers match actual drivers. The public is encouraged to report any violations via the TGA’s website or the unified number 19929.

This move builds on previous requirements for ride-hailing companies to use facial recognition, further reinforcing monitoring and regulatory compliance in the sector.
