Saudi Roads Code to enable safe autonomous vehicle integration

The Saudi Roads Code now includes sophisticated infrastructure criteria to facilitate the safe integration of autonomous vehicles throughout the Kingdom, according to a statement released by the General Authority for Roads.

The new rule establishes specifications for road construction and design that guarantee self-driving cars can function well in a variety of scenarios, the authority claims. These include creating pavement layers that can endure the repetitive routing patterns of self-driving cars, installing real-time communication systems alongside roads to provide vital information to cars, and using signs and road markings that machine vision systems can correctly read.

Parking lots are also being modified to incorporate smart features like self-parking and automatic guiding to improve traffic flow and minimize human mistake.

According to the authority, the code serves as a single technical reference for all pertinent parties, such as city development agencies, government ministries, and municipal organizations. It offers a framework for organizing, creating, running, and maintaining road infrastructure in a way that respects changing transportation technologies and environmental goals.

In-depth procedural manuals and assessment instruments are also included to help guarantee that road projects adhere to reasonable safety, sustainability, and financial efficiency standards.
