Saudi Arabia has taken a big step toward intelligent, AI-driven transportation systems by starting the first autonomous car test program in Riyadh. The program was inaugurated on Wednesday by Eng. Saleh Al-Jasser, Minister of Transport and Logistic Services and Chairman of the Transport General Authority. He emphasized the program's role in enabling advanced technologies and advancing a safe, intelligent transport ecosystem.
The project will take place in seven significant locations in Riyadh, including the North Train Station, Princess Nourah University, Roshn Business Front, Terminals 2 and 5 at King Khalid International Airport, and the offices of the Transport General Authority. There are 13 designated locations for pickup and drop-off.
The project, which was created through a cross-sector partnership between the Ministry of Interior, SDAIA, the Geospatial Authority, and private companies like AiDriver, WeRide, and Uber, demonstrates Saudi Arabia's determination to promote public-private cooperation and localize innovation.
Onboard safety officers will monitor the cars during the 12-month pilot period.
They will function on key highways and city roads under the Authority's direct technical and regulatory supervision.
By preparing for a wider national deployment, the Authority affirmed that the pilot will put Saudi Arabia at the forefront of autonomous mobility in the region.
